We were amazed, thrilled and pleased to have seen The Badlands, even though we really only skirted the north edge. As we drove on the rim road and the prairie dogs stared at us there appeared around the bend a bunch of parked cars. Then we could see the dark shapes of some large animals, maybe cattle? No, This was our first sighting of Bison. There were about 100 in an area of pasture, scattered with no real central group.
Of course some people wanted to have their picture taken with the Bison in the background, so out into the field they went, generally only about 10 yards or so. The nearest buffalo was probably 100 yards away and they made no notice of the humans. We did note that the ground right by the cars was well marked by hoofs, probably the Bison.
